5 Must Have Pieces for the Home Office

Setting up a home office is one of the best ways to stay motivated and on task when you work from home. Making yourself a professional looking work environment will help you separate your home life from your work life and help you stay on task as you work. Choosing the right office furniture will make your home work space comfortable and inviting, and make your working hours as pleasant as possible.

5 Must Have Pieces of Home Office Furniture:

Office Chair: Your chair is one of the most important pieces you will choose for your home office. In most professions, you'll spend plenty of time sitting down, and choosing the right chair allow you to work in comfort--and prevent you from experiencing aches and pains after hours as well. Look for a chair that has adjustable height and a seat that can be tilted. The more you can customize, the more comfortable your chair will be. Select a chair that is well padded and offers plenty of back and arm support, and take the time to adjust it to the right height before using.

Desk: Your desk should be sturdy and attractive; you won't be able to get fully comfortable at a desk or table that wobbles or doesn't feel stable. The desk you choose should look presentable -- in most cases, the desk will be the focal point of the room, so choose one that you like and will enjoy looking at each day. desk that looks presentable and is also comfy. If possible, choose the desk and chair at the same time, so you know they match and work well together.

Filing Cabinets: Using dedicated filing cabinets allows you to store your important papers out of sight, but keeps them accessible when you need them. This is useful in any office environment, but when you work at home, keeping your paperwork away from curious pets and children is absolutely essential. Look for filing cabinets that match the other pieces in the room, and use the tops of the cabinets to display awards and other inspirational items.

Visitor seating: Even if you work at home, you may have visitors from time to time; having seating in place will allow you to maintain a professional environment. Whether you choose a pair of comfy armchairs, a plush sofa or a simple slipper chair or two, having extra seating allows you to welcome guests without having to break out the folding chairs.

Depending on the type of work you do, having a second seating area gives you an extra spot to work as well. Sometimes just getting out from behind the desk and sitting in a different spot can help you focus on the task at hand. Whether you choose a comfortable sofa to lounge on to read a proposal or a table and chair set to leaf through advertising photos, you will get plenty of use from a secondary seating area, even if you don't have many visitors.

Bookshelves: Whether you have a law library, a set of reference books or simply want to keep certain items close at hand, a bookcase is an essential piece of home office furniture. If the space you have designated for your office is small, then a bookcase or two can add a lot of extra display and storage space without taking up a lot of floor area. Shelves can be used for more than books; use them to store photos, inspirational pieces, gifts and artwork as well.
